Happy 4th of July from Behind the Oaks Farm
Happy July from Behind the Oaks Farm! We hope your summer has been relaxing for you and your family. South Central Texas is enjoying quite a mild summer, and we are trying to soak up every bit of that bliss before the heat starts to really set in. Pastures are lush, animals are full, and we only had to turn on our sprinklers for the chickens and pigs in May-not one time in June. Pretty exciting stuff-and the animals are thankful for the nice days.
As Independence Day celebrations approach, we wanted to give a quick update on the Farm:
We moved our last batch of broiler chicks (until August) out to pasture a little over a week ago. It's a short but really nice break to not have meat birds in the brooders. We will work on some repairs to the houses themselves and redoing the ground around the brooders to keep snakes and mice from having hiding spaces.
Bulls are about to be turned out with our breed herd. It's later than we would have liked, but with the whole herd being together, we had to do some moving around to keep some heifers from being bred. The bulls have been hanging out with our sheep and our solo donkey for the past few months.
Pigs are living their best life. Their tank is full, and they are doing some great work cleaning up the edges of the tank. We will keep them there through July, and then they will be moved to another tank that needs some special work. The only thing we have to worry about with pigs are the piglets-farther back on our property, we have a bobcat that frequents the pastures-we don't want him or her having piglets for their snacks.
Saturdays are busy around here, both at the market and on the farm. We are so thankful for your support this summer. It's been great to see you and visit.
Make sure you sign up for our subscription boxes this summer, packed full of pasture raised poultry, regenerative meat, and eggs! These are limited, so go to our store and check it out.
