What's Behind the Name?
Welcome! Let’s dive into life at Behind the Oaks Farm, where we strive to prove that farming can heal the land and nourish our communities—standing strong through the generations, like the Heritage Oaks that inspired the name.
Behind the Oaks Farm started a little over 6 years ago where one door closed and another opened. We were thrust into full time ranching/farming, and we didn’t have a clue how to raise meat chickens or sell beef. But, we had passion.
First step was deciding on a name. So we started describing the features of the property, such as the creek and spring, obviously the oaks and then there were the Jets. Our property is unique in that it once sat behind a whole grove of oak trees right off Lower Seguin Road. Only the jets flying over knew what lay behind those trees.
Did we want to name our farm after the creek that ran through it like was popular with many ranches? “Woman Hollering Creek Ranch”-about a woman hollering for her lost child-Nope.
Every time people would visit, they always commented on the Oak trees. We are blessed with a few hundred trees spread throughout our property, and a lot of them are these giant majestic oak trees.
After a lot of contemplation, we decided on something to due with Oaks. It wasn’t any fancy brainstorming, we are behind a whole grove of them, and we have lots of them. Boom-Behind the Oaks Farm.
The oak trees with their large canopies have provided a wonderful habitat for our mutli species operation. They provide acorns for the pigs to root, shelter for the turkeys, shade for the cattle, and bugs and worms from their falling leaves for the chickens to scratch.
Thanks for being part of our story. These oaks have seen centuries; together, we are ensuring they’ll see centuries more.
